许烺光（1909—1999），出生在中国，毕业于沪江大学，曾留学英国伦敦大学，获博士学位，后回到中国从事实地调查和研究，1947年执教于美国西北大学人类学系，1977年—1978年当选为美国人类学协会主席。许烺光与露丝•本尼迪克特（《菊与刀》的作者）、玛格丽特•米德一样，同属于文化心理学派，独特的经历和东西方文化双重影响下“边缘人”的“身份以及卓越的才识，使他成为最有资格写这样一本书的人”。
